Background

The 2020 Brooklyn Master Plan addressed a wide range of topics such as City facilities, land use along major corridors, an outdated zoning ordinance, commercial and industrial redevelopment opportunities, transportation and connectivity issues, recreational and park needs, and housing maintenance. The city aggressively pursued implementation of the plan and returned to County Planning to provide updated actions for the community.

As an update to their 2020 Plan, County Planning developed a targeted project that would review their success, update remaining recommendations, and identify new and follow-on  actions for the city to pursue. The project included four main phases:

  • Implementation Scorecard & Current Conditions Update: A review of actions to identify those completed successfully and determine if remaining actions are still relevant. It also performed a targeted review of data and current conditions to identify any new or emerging issues facing the community.
  • Community Attitudes Survey: An online survey of community members to identify ideas, concerns, and opportunities for the community address. This was the main point of public engagement and was left open for approximately 6 weeks and was advertised throughout the city through the city newsletter, community events, and a postcard mailer. An accompanying student survey was conducted with a selection of students in grades 5 through 12 to gather the perspective of community youth.
  • Updated Recommendations: New and revised recommended actions for the community to pursue based on results of the initial phases and public input. This section also provides updated focus area and corridor recommendations  and an updated Future Character Areas map for the community.
  • Implementation: This final section prioritized actions as well as identified potential early wins to help the community begin implementation of the plan

The 2026 BrooklynMaster Plan Update will help the community maintain the momentum achieved through its successful implementation of the 2020 Master Plan. County Planning is excited to see them achieve their vision for the community's future.
