Having already addressed and completed many of the recommendations from their 2020 Master Plan, the City of Brooklyn is working with County Planning to put together a strategic plan to identify new recommended actions and continue the City’s positive momentum.
Background
The City of Brooklyn adopted its current Master Plan in 2020. The 2020 Brooklyn Master Plan addressed a wide range of topics such as City facilities, land use along major corridors, an outdated zoning ordinance, commercial and industrial redevelopment opportunities, transportation and connectivity issues, recreational and park needs, and housing maintenance. As part of this Master Plan, five broad goals were laid out to guide the recommended actions, including:
- Goal 1: Strengthen Brooklyn’s Identity
- Goal 2: Enhance Parks & Recreation
- Goal 3: Exceptional Services & Facilities
- Goal 4: Promote A Strong Local Economy
- Goal 5: A Livable Community
From the onset, the City has been proactive in implementing recommendations from the Master Plan, with some of its largest undertakings including new City branding and signage, a new Civic Center and Police Station, a new zoning ordinance, extensive park improvements and additions, and several streetscape beautification projects. At the start of 2025, the City engaged County Planning for professional planning services to provide an update to the 2020 Master Plan. This Master Plan Update will highlight areas from the current plan that could be further addressed and identify new actions and priorities for the City to pursue in the next ten years.
Process
The target completion date of this Master Plan Update is April 2026. As an update to the current Master Plan, this process is more streamlined than a typical master planning process, and includes the following phases and tasks:
- Implementation Review & Current Conditions Update
Review the City’s progress towards completing the Master Plan goals and recommended actions and provide a brief overview of key regional and local trends impacting the City - Community Attitudes Survey & Vision Calibration
Administer a robust community survey to gather community members’ input on the City’s progress in the past five years and desires for the future to update the Community Goals and inform new recommended actions - Strategic Planning Recommendations
Develop a focused set of updated recommended actions for the community to pursue in the next ten years - Implementation Plan
Identify priorities and key strategies to ensure the successful implementation of the recommended actions - Final Plan
Combine the work from previous phases into one Master Plan Update document
